South African gold miners strike for first time in 18 years

Robert Frost wrote a poem involving northern New
Hampshire and described it as a place "where the
trees grow short, the mosses tall." Those of us
heading deeper into the Klondike for Gold Rush
21 may be getting the idea.
But we're not yet so remote that we're out of
touch with the Internet, so here are the
latest standings in the auction of the 10
Johnson-Matthey 1-ounce gold bars being
donated to GATA by Agnico-Eagle Mines Ltd.:
* S.F., New York: $10,000.
* T.C., New York: $3,000.
* R.O.: $2,500.
* J.P., Switzerland: $2,500.
* J.P., Switzerland: $2,500. (second bar)
* H.P.: $1,500.
* H. van H., Netherlands: $1,500.
* C.W-J., Australia: $1,350.
* T.G., Missouri, $1,350.
Two tied for 10th:
* D.L., South Dakota: $1,250.
* R.C., $1,250.
We'll try to accept new and revised bids as
late as we can before the auction, to be
held at Gold Rush 21 in Dawson City in a
couple of days, but because of the uncertainty
of communications we can't guarantee
perfection.
