SHARON, Conn. -- A local woman known both for her
dedication to her family and as an international
philanthropist was killed in an automobile accident
in India on Sunday.

Barbara Sinclair, 63, died when the vehicle in which
she was a passenger was struck from behind by a
truck and crashed into a bus, said Arthur Hahn,
Sinclair's brother, who was at the Sinclair residence
on Amenia Road Thursday.

"She had just arrived in India. We had a car service
pick her up," Hahn said.

Sinclair was on a spiritual path, following the teachings
of an Indian spiritual leader. "She was on her way to visit
her spiritual adviser, Sai Baba," Hahn said. Sinclair had
landed in Bangalore in southern India and was on her
way to Sai Baba's center in Puttapharthe.

Sinclair, a philanthropist, also was on her way to provide
social services, said her husband, James Sinclair, who
said, "I was married to a saint."

"It's horrible. My heart's been ripped out of my chest,"
Sinclair said Thursday. "If I could take her place, I would
in a heartbeat. What I can't figure out is how I deserved
that woman."

The family will celebrate Sinclair's life and "dedicate
ourselves to living up to her standards," he said.

Along with her husband, who is chairman and chief
executive officer of Tan Range Exploration Corp., an
international mining exploration company, and her
brother Arthur, Sinclair is survived by three daughters,
Marlene, Michelle, and Christine, one grandchild, and
another brother, Frank.

Sinclair was the daughter of the late Frank and Helen
Hahn of Westchester, N.Y..

"My sister did everything. She cooked, she was into
antiques -- there's so many things. She and Jim traveled
all over the world together and she was also a very good
investor," Arthur Hahn said.

Sinclair helped build hospitals in India and in Africa, where
her eldest daughter lives, her husband said. "I'm not
talking about small dispensaries. I'm talking about major
hospitals," Sinclair said. "It took $1.3 million to build their
hospital in Tanzania."

In the Northwest Corner, neighbors recalled Sinclair as a
devoted mother and wife.

"You can't imagine the shock. She was my best intellectual
friend," said Kathy Blackshaw of Pine Hill Farm in Sharon,
who said she and Sinclair were friends for about 25 years.

"She was quiet and composed under pressure. You never
saw Barbara rattled even in situations when most people
would be. I have only good stories. Both Barbara and Jim
have been so good to me. You could always talk and she
would listen and I'm going to miss her total quiet
companionship," Blackshaw said.

Kathy Clegg, a Salisbury artist, praised Sinclair for her
thoughtfulness, kindness, and dedication not only to her
husband and children but also to her mother, who lived
with her.

"She was very family-oriented. She was such a good
friend. I have happy memories of all the times I was with
her and Jim and we'll miss her terribly," Clegg said.
