A woman paid thousands of rands for one hour's
parking -- with a single coin in the meter.
The 55-year-old inadvertently dropped a century-old
gold Kruger sovereign she reckons could be worth
as much as 7,000 rand into a Paarl parking meter
while out shopping -- without her glasses.
But her disastrous way with the family heirlooms
didn't stop there. She thinks she spent an 1890
sovereign, also worth a small fortune, as a 20-
cent piece.
She had inherited three gold coins from her mother:
two Kruger sovereigns dated 1894 and 1895, and
the half-sovereign dated 1890.
But the valuable coins got mixed up with loose coins
she kept in a container, and were eventually
transferred to her purse with small change.
The mortified shopper, who understandably does not
wish to be named, says she thought the sovereign
was a 50-cent coin because it is the same size.
She also lost the half-sovereign, the size of today's
20-cent, and suspects she accidentally spent it.
She explained that at the time she was in a state
of shock after the death of her mother. She said
she did not realise she had the coins with her,
nor did she have her spectacles.
"I'm a very responsible, caring, and usually careful
person," she said. "I can't believe I could have done
something like that."
She knows she lost the coins between May 8 and
May 18.
Cavin Cornelissen of Drakenstein municipality said
locked coin boxes from meters went to the financial
services department at Paarl civic centre fortnightly.
There, the money was counted by machine before
being banked.
The woman pleaded: "If anyone comes across one
of my coins, I hope it will be returned to me. They
have been in the family for four generations." If you
