Vizma Sprott, born June 22, 1945, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2025, at her home in Toronto, surrounded by family, after a long fight with cancer.
Vizma is survived and missed by her loving husband, Eric, and two daughters, Juliana and Larisa.

Vizma was an outstanding grandmother to five beautiful grandchildren: Grayson, Delilah, Hudson, Vivienne, and Beau. She would spend hours reading to them, playing in the fairy garden, teaching them about fruits and veggies growing in the garden at Lake of Bays, and wowing the kids with her knack for winning Uno, especially her prowess with the Uno Reverse move.
She was also a wonderful sister to Mudite, and aunt extraordinaire to Julija, Sharman, Spencer, Mark, Ben, Jennifer, and Lizzie, and was beloved by her extended family and friends here in Canada, and in Latvia.
Vizma had a strong circle of friends and always looked forward to her "Girls Lunches" and the "Ladies of the Lake" Book Club gatherings; her friendships were incredibly important to her. She was smart, clever, and loved to laugh with her girlfriends, whom she adored.
After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Toronto, Vizma parlayed her love of books (especially those by Canadian authors) by opening Bookers Bookstore in Oakville. She hosted sold-out gatherings and impressive author talks, and was a well-known member of the Oakville community. She received awards and accolades for her contributions to the arts, and was whimsically referred to as the "Queen of Oakville."
Vizma was a founder of The Sprott Foundation, with a focus on urgent human need, homelessness, and hunger. She sought to bring hope and dignity to those who were disadvantaged. Guided by these principles that were close to her heart, she positively impacted the lives of millions and millions of Canadians.
Vizma had a passion for travel, golf, reading, playing with colour, and making lists (constantly working on several projects at once). She had a brilliant eye for fashion and design, and always turned heads with her elegant style.
Vizma was truly one of a kind, and everyone who knew her was inspired by her radiance, and strength. Her kindness and determined spirit will live on in the memories of everyone who knew and loved her.
We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the ladies who tirelessly cared for Vizma over the past four years, especially Daisy and Marie-Sol. You were by her side for all of her illness and we know you are mourning her as much as we are at this time.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles / Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville), Toronto, on Tuesday, February 18, between 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. A reception will be held on Wednesday, February 19, at The Four Seasons Hotel, 60 Yorkville Avenue, Toronto between 5 and 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, our family asks that donations be made to UHN Foundation, directed to their Palliative Care Program.
