Alaska gold and copper mine blocked over environmental concerns

JUNEAU, Alaska -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency took an unusually strong step today and blocked a proposed mine heralded by backers as the most significant undeveloped copper and gold resource in the world. The EPA cited concerns about the project's environmental impact on a rich Alaska aquatic ecosystem that supports the world's largest sockeye salmon fishery.

Highlights from the Homestake Main Deposit include:
-- HR22-324: 4.32 g/t Au and 76 g/t Ag over 22.50 meters including 19.42 g/t Au and 375 g/t Ag over 4.50 meters.
-- HR22-333: 46.31 g/t Au, 70 g/t Ag and 0.19% Cu over 25.00 meters including 1,145 g/t Au, 826 g/t Ag and 0.51% Cu over 0.48 meters. ...
"Dolly Varden Silver's initial drilling at the Homestake Main Deposit has returned consistent mineralized intervals with some of the highest grades of gold with silver reported from the Property to date, but also the entire Golden Triangle during the 2022 drilling season," said Shawn Khunkhun, president and CEO.

The move, cheered by Alaska native tribes and environmentalists and condemned by some state officials and mining interests, deals a heavy blow to the proposed Pebble Mine. The intended site is in a remote area of southwest Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, about 200 miles (322 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage.
It's accessible only by helicopter and snowmobile in winter, developer Pebble Limited Partnership said in a permit application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As proposed, it called for a mining rate of up to 73 million tons a year....
