Dear Friend of GATA and Gold:

Bullion Star's Ronan Manly today elaborates dramatically on a point made by your secretary/treasurer at GATA's Gold Rush 21 conference in Dawson City, Yukon Territory, back in August 2005. That is, the use of gold by militaries to equip their soldiers behind enemy lines demonstrates that gold remains money at all times and in all circumstances everywhere.

Your secretary/treasurer's observation comes at the 1-minute mark here:

Manly concludes: "But why is it that physical gold can get you out of a hostile or dangerous situation when no other form of money will do? Yes, gold is portable, inherently valuable, and internationally recognized. But beyond this, there is still physical gold's mystique, a tangible universal money that has been used for thousands of years, in all civilizations. Generation after generation knows this, especially outside the West. Unsurprisingly, so do the elite military, who through design or otherwise tend to find themselves in these hot spots of conflict behind enemy lines."

This also explains why governments consider gold so dangerous and usually strive to suppress its value against that of their own currencies -- because gold is always potentially money they can't easily control.

Manly's report is headlined "Behind Enemy Lines -- Military Use of Gold Coins as Emergency Money" and it's posted at Bullion Star here:
