To the editor of The New York Times:
"Finding Gold (and New Friends) in Gold" by Landon Thomas in your
May 7 edition reminded me of the three monkeys who "hear no evil,
see no evil, and speak no evil."
How does this mainstream journalist conclude from his findings that
GATA Chairman Bill Murphy's accusation that New York-based Goldman
Sachs and J.P. Morgan Chase have manipulated the gold market is "far-
fetched"?
Mr. Thomas asked the accused but they declined to comment. Did he
ask interviewees James Sinclair and James Turk?No, both of these
knowledgeable gold supporters have written for years that investment
banks rig the gold market.
Instead, Mr. Thomas consults fund manager William Miller III.Miller
doesn't own any gold and claims that gold has been "propelled upward
by a wave of hot money."
Since precious metals have been the top-performing financial sector
for four of the past five years and is No. 1 againin 2006, I'm
wondering when Mr. Miller reached his conclusion.
When it comes to financial journalism, Wall Street is rarely
confronted.Whether it is accusations of over-touted tech stocks in
2000 or manipulation of the gold market today, seldom will the
mainstream U.S. media tell it like it is.In the case of gold, we'll
let the market price determine who is right.
