GATA consultant Robert K. Landis has just examined
at length the literature on the question of the day
among gold's followers: whether gold is a hedge
against inflation or deflation. He concludes that
gold is a hedge against monetary collapse, whether
that collapse seems inflationary or deflationary:
"Gold is what you want when they seal the borders
and you need to get across; it's what's accepted
when there's blood in the streets and nothing else
flies."
Landis' study is highly entertaining -- its mock
news dispatch from an America of the not-too-
distant future may be an instant classic -- but
it's not for casual reading. Give yourself a
half-hour with it, along with, perhaps, a glass of
your favorite drink. When you're finished reading
you may want to pour a few more, or even finish
off the liquor cabinet before the mob of people
with variable-rate mortgages rampages through the
neighborhood. But that's OK; it's the weekend.
