* Covering the San Francisco Gold and Precious
Metals Conference, Tim Wood reports on Newmont
Mining President Pierre Lassonde's keynote
address, which predicted a four-digit gold
price. Lassonde said: "At the end of the day,
all currencies will have to depreciate against
the only currency that is not managed, and that
is gold." It's a wonderful thought, but it's
hard to believe that Lassonde really thinks that
gold is the only currency not being manipulated
by central banks. (Maybe when they run out of
the stuff. They'll never run out of paper and

* In an interview, Wood gets Lassonde to speak
enthusiastically about the World Gold Council's new
exchange-traded fund. The story acknowledges the
suspicions of the "gold conspiracy camp" as to
whether the fund really has the gold it claims to
have or even knows where its gold is. (Oh, those
conspiracy nuts, actually reading the prospectus!)
