J.P. Koning: Why the U.S. Mint once issued gold discs to Saudi Arabia

Koning tells the fascinating story of how in the late 1940s the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia made gold coins for the Saudi Arabian government that have become collector's items with high premiums. But contrary to widespread belief, Koning writes, the coins, dominated only by their weight and purity, had nothing to do with the Arab-American Oil Co.
